Episode #119: Brain Twisters

Listen to Episode 119 of the Podcast here while you enjoy the show notes.

SUMMARY - In Brain Twisters, Dr. Rothman (played by Terry Londeree) is a college professor who uses his students as test subjects for scientific experiments. Their heads are hooked up to an unusual device that puts them into a trance. However, there is one slight side-effect: the kids are starting to kill each other.

Screenplay by Jerry Sangiuliano; Directed by Jerry Sangiuliano; and released on October 12, 1991.

Look, we'll be honest. We have no idea what is actually going on in this.

There's some sort of contraption and video feed that does something

but it is never explained what that is

people are dying (in largely pathetic ways)

and the main suspect is the super creepy teacher guy

meanwhile the cop is trying to date the student witness?

there's a lot of unexplained stuff happening

and the story is far too PG to be a lot of fun - we need more gore

and it needs an actual explanation

but look...doggie!

Awards Talk: None to speak of this time but is that surprising considering how small this is?

This week we don't have any true crime to talk about so we jump right into the events of the day

What Happened On this Day? There was a famous celebrity wedding of a highly celebrated director who gave us "Hook."

Here's what was on TV this day, since you probably didn't go to the rental store and pick this up day one.

We talk a little about the Nurses TV show -

And we talk a lot about the Kirstie Alley episode of Saturday Night Live which aired this day. We touch on the 1991 interpretations of Joe Biden and Clarence Thomas (as well as the surprising jokes around that whole situation) and also other interesting sketches -

Nikki 1-5 star scale - 1 out of 5

Jon 0-4 star scale - 1 out of 4

Would you watch it again? - Not a chance. Nikki almost went off the scale to give this a zero since the plot is so obtuse. Neither of us could actually tell what was supposed to be happening or what the machine actually did or how it works. Plus the horror parts are extremely tame so there aren't even many parts worth making fun of. Apparently there is a 2017 director's cut, so we'd consider watching those new scenes only.

If you want to watch Brain Twisters, as of this recording in June 2023, it’s available on VHS, DVD. Check your local listings.
